Who receives zakat?

The categories of recipients are set out in the Qur’an, at-Tawbah 9:60: the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, those in bondage, those in debt, those in the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller.

What is zakatable?

  • Cash, bank balances and foreign currency
  • Gold and silver (including jewellery, according to the Hanafi school)
  • Goods held for sale
  • Receivables you expect to collect

What is not?

Basic needs — the home you live in, the car you use, household items and tools of your trade — are not subject to zakat.

Can zakat be used for the mosque?

No. Zakat must pass into the ownership of an eligible recipient, so it cannot be spent on building or running a mosque. Zakat entrusted to us is kept in a separate account and delivered only to those eligible to receive it. To support the mosque itself, you may give sadaqah or ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah).
